The iRobot Roomba 980 is the latest model in the line of top-of-the-line best robotic mop and vacuum vacuum cleaners that are an essential part in any modern home. This model is extremely powerful suction as well as an HEPA filter that will assist anyone suffering from allergies. Additionally it has a strong battery that can clean up to two hours and it will automatically return to its dock when it is full.

Smart mapping is another feature that helps it identify areas in your home that require attention and provides a path for cleaning around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a great job of moving around toys that have been placed on the floor or furniture legs that stick out of the ground. Roomba also has a sensor that snaps Roomba back to reality when it starts to wander away from its original position.

iRobot has also added a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that don't have bristles, which makes them more likely to resist tangles than previous models. These are also a little higher than the older rollers and are able to fit under beds and couches that are low and are designed to allow this model to move more easily across different flooring kinds.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other high-end models, though, is its inclusion of a new dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to identify bits of embedded dirt. This is a nice improvement over the previous model, which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around the room and clean everything at least three times from different angles.

In our tests of its performance it was found that the Roomba 980 did well on carpets and hard flooring. It scored very well on low-pile carpet and also on mid-pile. It did a fair job of removing pet hair, but it had a difficult time with very thick and long pet fur that was clumped together.

Despite these minor shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's not even close to being as expensive as the other top-of-the-line models in this list. It's got plenty of features we'd expect to see in a flagship model, but it doesn't have all the fancy app-enabled functions or smart home integration that are found in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and start running right away. After taking off the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all that you need to connect it to its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its large "Clean" button and let it get to work. It will return to docking station when it runs out of battery or is full of debris. There are also indicators at the top of the bin that let you know when the bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
