Avon Publications was founded in 1941 by the American News Company as a paperback publisher. It was initially focused on comic books but quickly changed to include a variety of genres, especially romance.

Today, Avon is an imprint of HarperCollins which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary celebration is underway.

Avon Publications

Avon Books was a major competitor to the more literary Pocket Book Company in the beginning of the paperback publishing industry. Avon was a mass-market company and published westerns, mysteries, and romances with colorful covers. Their books were cheaper than the more expensive Pocket books and they were targeted at housewives who would have time to read in between cooking and cleaning.

Avon published digest-format paper (the size of the current short story magazines) in series like Murder Mystery Monthly, Avon Fantasy Reader and many others. These editions contain many authors that are prized by collectors. They include A. Merritt and James M. Cain as well as H. P. Lovecraft.

By the mid-1950s, Avon was selling over 20 million books a year. Their 25-cent "G" series featured the most popular genres of westerns, whodunits, and the boy-meets girl stories that were popular in the 1950s. Avon had a 35 cent "T" series that featured the usual suspects such as mystery, science fiction, and other similar genres.

In its early years Avon's emphasis on popularity resulted in the publication of fantasy novels, ghost stories and sexually explicit love stories. These were far from the more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon was bought by the Hearst Corporation and the focus was shifted to more mainstream literature.

Avon is a top publisher of Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers. They are a leader in crime, thrillers and suspense. Avon Impulse

Founded in 1941, Avon was initially an e-book publisher and comic book publisher. Later, they specialized in romance novels. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company. Meyers hired brothers and sisters to staff the company. He wanted to create an alternative to Pocket Books. They achieved this by printing paperbacks that were more affordable with appealing mass appeal and gorgeous covers.

In the 1970s, Avon was at its peak as a romance book publisher. They released Kathleen Woodiwiss's sexy novel, Avon book August The Flame and the Flower, which spent 33 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. They also published the sexy novel of Rosemary Rogers, including Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies. These were the first time that a single book topped the chart for this genre.

The company was bought by Hearst Corporation in 1959. Hearst placed a greater emphasis on its romance offerings, causing it to grow into one of the biggest publishers of this genre. The company continued to release inexpensive paperbacks that featured popular themes such as westerns and whodunits, but the focus on romance led to them becoming more profitable.

Avon still publishes romance novels today. The company recently launched an online imprint, Avon Impulse, which publishes ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint accepts submissions from amateur authors who aren't represented by an agent. Authors can explore their limits without worrying about the reaction of the publishing industry.

Avon and Harper Collins merged in 1999. Avon's non-romance paperback and hardcover lines were moved to Morrow, which is the sister imprint of Harper Collins. This meant that there was no longer Avon publishing romance novels. Avon Books was eventually renamed and is still a significant part of HarperCollins. The catalog now includes more than just classic romances but also women's fiction as well as sagas.
